Become a Governor
To express an interest in becoming a Governor, please contact the Head Teacher, or Chair of Governors, via the school office: office@bcjs.org.uk
We are currently seeking applications for parents to stand for election as a parent governor of Banstead Community Junior School. There is a vacancy and parents with some experience in finance, education, IT, personnel, building maintenance or construction would be welcomed, but this is not essential.
Any parent, including a person with parental responsibility, or carer, of a registered pupil at the school at the time of election is eligible to stand for election as a parent governor.
The term of office is 4 years. Once elected, parent governors can serve the whole term irrespective of how long their child remains as a registered pupil of the school.
The role of the governing body
The governing body has specific statutory responsibilities and its main tasks are:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction.
- Holding the School Management to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff.
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
The role of a parent governor
The role of parent governor is an important one. The governing body has thirteen members, four of them parent governors. It is important that parents are fully represented on the governing board, as with all other groups, in order to ensure a proper balance on the board and its committees.
To be a parent governor, you should have:
- A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children.
- Good inter-personal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- The specific skills required to ensure the governing body delivers effective governance.
New governor induction training will be provided.
There are two committees – the Teaching and Learning Committee covering all aspects of children’s learning and well-being; and the School Resources Committee which covers finance, personnel, premises and all aspects of health and safety. New governors are invited to join one or both of these two committees depending on their areas of expertise and interest.
The expectations of a parent governor
All governors are expected to:
- Attend meetings. There are four full governing body meetings each year and usually at least one meeting of each committee every term. Most meetings are held before or after school, usually either 8.15 am or 5.15 pm.
- Visit the school as regularly as possible since this enables governors to make the best decisions for the children based on knowledge of their needs.
- Attend the free training courses which are relevant to them, to develop their knowledge, skills and experience.
How to apply
If you are considering standing, it is recommended that you first contact the Headteacher or the Chair via our office email to find out more. This will provide you with a fuller picture and a chance to ask any questions you may have. The governing body’s Code of Conduct, also gives additional infomation and all governors are asked to sign this at the start of their term of office.
Parent Governors are elected in accordance with Schedule 1 of the School Governance (Constitution) (England) Regulations 2012.
