School Captains
What do the school captains do?
The role of the school captains is an important and prestigious position available only to Year 6 pupils. At the start of the year, any Year 6 student can put their name forward for consideration. Once all the names are collected, the staff members vote for their preferred candidates. After the votes are counted, the two boys and two girls with the highest number of votes from each class move on to the next round.
These selected students are then asked to write a 3-minute speech detailing why they should be school captain, which they will present in front of the whole school. The students then vote for one boy and one girl, who can come from any Year 6 class. The boy and girl with the highest number of votes are chosen as the school captains, while the second highest boy and girl become the vice captains.
The chosen captains are given badges to wear at all times throughout the year, signifying their leadership roles. Their responsibilities include representing the school at important events, such as laying a wreath at the Remembrance Parade, and being role models for all students. They help ensure that the school runs smoothly by carrying out various duties, such as assisting with school events like Sports Day and helping maintain good behaviour among students.
The school captains also serve as a link between the pupils and the teachers, ensuring students’ voices are heard. They attend both internal and external events on behalf of the school, reinforcing their leadership roles. Finally, at the end of the school year, the school captains are asked to deliver a speech during the Year 6 end-of-year assembly, reflecting on their time as captains and representing their classmates.
Overall, the role of the school captains is about leadership, responsibility, and being a positive influence on the entire school community.
School Council
What does the student council do?
The student council plays a key role in representing the students' opinions and ideas in school. Two children from each class are voted by their peers to become the class captains, who act as representatives in the school council. They will be the class captains for a term and half before stepping down and two new members voted in.
The school council meets every Thursday for half an hour to discuss important topics and events within the school. One of the main tasks of the student council is to ensure that the voices of the students are heard. They are informed about upcoming events such as charity fundraisers, and then share ideas on how to support these initiatives and raise money.
In addition, the council gathers feedback from students on various aspects of school life, like the quality of school lunches, suggestions for activities or changes that could improve their experience at school. This feedback is then passed along to the school's senior management for consideration.
The student council also has the opportunity to represent the school in special events, including council-led activities and public events like the Remembrance Parade. They act as a bridge between the students and the staff by passing important messages to their classmates to keep everyone informed about what’s happening.
Class captains are given a school council badge to wear at all times in school. The badge helps make sure the class captains are easily identifiable by both students and staff, allowing them to effectively fulfil their role of representing their classmates and assisting with any concerns or tasks that may arise.
Overall, the student council helps make sure that the students have a voice and that their ideas and opinions are shared with the wider school community.
